  • Microsoft’s new tool makes it easier to patch the CrowdStrike update outage.
  • The tool also works on systems without admin access privileges.

Microsoft released a new tool to help Windows users recover their systems affected by the CrowdStrike outage last Friday. The tool allows users to quickly fix the corrupted update files from CrowdStrike and restore full functionality on all Windows computers. The tool comes as a relief for over 8.5 million Windows users worldwide who were facing blue-screen errors.

Microsoft’s New Tool For CrowdStrike Outage

The new tool released by Microsoft automatically deletes CrowdStrike-related files from the Windows OS using a bootable USB drive. Previously, users were required to manually remove those files by booting into safe mode.

However, enterprise-grade systems and devices part of an IT chain were finding it difficult to do this, as those computers have restricted admin access.

Microsoft’s new tool can fix the problem in two ways: first, using WinPE, and second, using Safe Mode. Both methods involve creating an external boot drive (preferably a USB drive) to create a quick OS repair file that directly patches the CrowdStrike files in Windows. Users can download the tool from the official Microsoft support page.

The WinPE method is suitable for users who do not have access to admit privileges on their system. However, it may ask users to manually enter the BitLocker recovery file, as this fix directly changes the core OS files.

The Safe Mode method will work across all devices with admin access. Users can boot their Windows computer into Safe Mode and select the USB drive as a boot drive. It will automatically patch the Windows OS, preventing further blue screen shutdowns.

Microsoft has also released multiple sets of guidelines on its official website. The company has mentioned detailed steps and precautions for different types of systems, such as regular Windows, server-grade computers, virtual machines, and other types of integrated OS.

Although only 1% of the world’s Windows computers were affected by the issue, it caused a major IT outage at a global level. Multiple airlines had to ground their files temporarily, consultancy firms faced complete downtimes, and even some banks could not function properly.

Microsoft says that the issue has been successfully patched, and the new tool will prevent any subsequent issues related to this CrowdStrike issue.
