Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced four new initiatives to prevent cybercrime in India, while addressing the first Foundation Day celebration of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C). Here are the details.
Initiatives to Curb Cybercrime in India
The four initiaitves include,
- Cyber Commandos program: Aimed at training specialists in the country, among law enforcement agencies to deal with cybercrime more effectively.
- Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre: Dedicated to protecting against cyber fraud and crime.
- Samanvaya: A web-based platform for cybercrime data repository, sharing, mapping and analytics, to be used by law enforcement agencies.
- Suspect Registry: A new initiative to fight cyber fraud, by creating a national-level registry of cybercrime suspects. The data will be based on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.

There are plans to train 5,000 cyber commandos in the next five years to fight cybercrime in the country. Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre now has these institutions under it to combat cybercrime:
- National Cyber Crime Threat Analytical Unit
- National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal
- National Cyber Crime Forensic Laboratory
- National Cyber Crime Training Centre
- Joint Cyber Crime Investigation Task Force
- Cyber Crime Ecosystem Management Unit
- National Cyber Crime Research and Innovation Centre
Amit Shah announced that I4C would launch a cyber security awareness campaign, which will run across various channels like FM radio, digital ads and more. I4C aka Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre was set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India to fight cybercrime. It was approved in October 2018 and was inaugurated by Amit Shah in January 2020.
I4C was instrumental in identifying and banning several apps and websites committing cyber crimes and posing a threat to the national security of the country. Chinese-linked apps such as TikTok, WeChat, and more were banned after inputs from I4C in 2020. Several illegal loan apps, gambling apps, betting apps, phishing sites and more were banned in India based on the recommendation from I4C.
