YouTube is rolling out new features for its mobile and TV apps. A miniplayer is now available on mobile, and TV users can enjoy a revamped Shorts experience. The long-awaited Sleep Timer has also arrived, along with several updates for Playlists. Here’s a breakdown of all the new YouTube features.
New Miniplayer
YouTube has updated the miniplayer in the YouTube app for Android and iOS. The video you’re playing in the miniplayer can be placed in any corner of the screen, rather than being just minimised above the navigation tab.
Playlists Improvements
YouTube Playlists are getting many new features. First, YouTube is making it easy to make collaborative playlists with your friends and family. You can invite others to make a collaborative playlist by sharing an invite link and QR codes for TVs to share playlists.
Users can now add custom thumbnails for playlists by uploading one or by creating new ones using AI. YouTube notes that these updates to Playlists are coming to mobile, web, TVs, and YouTube Music.
YouTube also unveiled its plans to add a voting system for playlists, where creators can even have their viewers rank their favourite videos in a playlist. It is coming to YouTube playlists before 2025.
Sleep Timer
YouTube is finally adding Sleep Timer, with which you can set the video to pause after a certain duration of time. This feature was previously available for YouTube Premium members as a test feature, and it’s here for all users starting today. Sleep Timer is available from the video settings, and users can enable it for 10 minutes and up to the End of video.
Badges
YouTube is introducing Badges, where fans of creators can earn milestones for doing things like being the first set of paid members of a channel, correctly completing quizzes, being the top listener of an artist, or having a heart comment from the creator. Users can also view the badges they earned in the You tab, and it will be rolling out in the next several weeks.
New YouTube TV Experience
YouTube TV is changing, with fresh new visual enhancements on the TV app, as it brings more existing features from mobile and web. The Shorts experience on TVs is getting an upgrade, with a new UI which lets users scroll through the comments without interrupting the video.
YouTube TV has also introduced immersive channel pages. When you visit a creator's channel page, a video will automatically start playing in the background, accompanied by a fresh new user interface.
Furthermore, YouTube provided more details through an interview with its CTO, Johanna, on the Creator Insider channel. Here’s the complete interview for more insights.
