WhatsApp is developing a new feature to help users verify the authenticity of images they receive on the platform. The Meta-owned instant messaging platform is testing the Search on Web functionality. The popular WhatsApp tracking website WABetaInfo has found the new feature in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.23.13 update.
WhatsApp Users Will Soon Be Able to Use Reverse Image Search From App
If you have used Google’s reverse image search feature in the past, you know how useful it is. You can find more details and contextual information about a person, product, and just about anything using a picture. WhatsApp seems to be bringing the feature to its platform through a future update.
According to recent data, a whopping 7 billion images are shared on WhatsApp daily. In the era of AI and doctored images, it’s nearly impossible to check whether the image you received is legit or doctored. The new WhatsApp Search on Web feature will take the guesswork out of it and check the image’s authenticity.
The feature will be baked into the app, meaning users don’t have to download the image and then upload it to Google to search. Moreover, WhatsApp’s principle of maintaining the privacy of its users means that while the image is sent to Google for searching, it’s encrypted and cannot be shared or processed by WhatsApp itself.
The feature can be accessed by tapping on a shared image in full size, selecting the three-dotted menu in the top right corner, and clicking the Search on the Web option for relevant results.
The WhatsApp image search on the web feature is currently available to limited beta testers on Android. We expect it to roll out to more beta testers and general users in the coming days.
