Some YouTube videos can be frustrating to watch, especially when the title and thumbnail promise something and don’t deliver or talk about something else entirely. YouTube announced yesterday that it is ramping up the fight against clickbait videos, beginning with creators and videos from India.
YouTube Crackdown on Clickbait Video
YouTube has announced that it is strengthening its fight against misleading content and clickbait and it will start to remove videos with clickbait titles that leave viewers feeling tricked, frustrated, or misled.
YouTube clarifies what constitutes a clickbait video title in the blog post:
“Egregious clickbait occurs when the video’s title or thumbnail includes promises or claims that aren’t delivered within the video itself, especially when that content focuses on breaking news or current events.”
YouTube also mentions these efforts will be concentrated on new uploads and will focus mostly on breaking news or current events. YouTube will start rolling out these changes in India first “over the coming months.”
Videos Will Be Removed, But No Strike for Creators
Usually, when YouTube videos get removed for reasons such as copyright violations, spam and deceptive practices, spreading misinformation, and more, YouTube enforces a strike, which puts the creator’s channel at risk of removal from YouTube.
However, YouTube isn’t enforcing strikes for videos that are removed for posting clickbait titles, the company has clarified in the blog post. YouTube says it wants to educate creators about clickbait, not punish them.
