Highlights
  • Air India has become the first airline to offer in-flight Wi-Fi internet connectivity for flights within India.
  • The service is available on select Airbus and Boeing flights.

Air India has finally addressed travellers’ biggest grievances about flights. The leading global airline has announced in-flight Wi-Fi internet connectivity on several of its flights in India. The announcement comes after the Indian government allowed internet services through Wi-Fi in aircraft. Let’s look at all the details of Air India’s in-flight Wi-Fi service in India and how it works.

Air India Starts In-Flight Wi-Fi Service on Select Flights in India

The airline’s latest announcement comes after the Indian government amended the Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024. According to the amendment, in-flight Wi-Fi will be allowed once the aircraft reaches a minimum altitude of 3,000 meters. The amendment rule also states that Wi-Fi will be accessible through electronic gadgets like smartphones, laptops, and tablets.

Users will be able to connect multiple gadgets to the in-flight Wi-Fi. Air India has already conducted the in-flight Wi-Fi pilot programs on international flights to New York, London, Singapore, and Paris.

Air India has announced that the domestic in-flight Wi-Fi service will be available on domestic flights, including Airbus A350, select Airbus A321 Neo flights, and Boeing 787-9. The service went live on these flights, starting January 1, 2025, and the airline plans to expand it to its entire fleet gradually.

According to Air India’s announcement, the service will be free for all users during the introductory period. This means we can safely assume that the airline might charge a fee for it later.

How to Use Air India In-Flight Wi-Fi Service?

You need to put your gadgets in Airplane Mode in flight per usual but Wi-Fi works even in aeroplane mode so you can follow the steps below:

  1. Pull down the notification panel on your device and long-press Wi-Fi toggle to open settings.
  2. Choose Air India Wi-Fi from available networks.
