The Reliance-Star joint venture has officially launched the new JioHotstar streaming platform. It combines all the content from JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, along with international web series and movies. The new service will stream live cricket, football, and other sports matches. Here are the details.
JioHotstar OTT Launched: What’s New?
JioHotstar has a content library of over 3,00,000 hours, and it has merged all the content from JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. This also contains international content from partners like HBO, Disney, Paramount, and others. It will stream movies and web series in over 10 Indian languages with up to 4K resolution.
Prime sporting events such as ICC Cricket Tournaments, the IPL, WPL, and other domestic matches in India will also stream on this platform. Other sporting tournamets that will be available to watch on JioHotstar include Premiere League, Pro Kabaddi League, and the Wimbledon. It will also integrate AI-powered insights, advanced replays, and multiple camera angles.
Instead of launching a new app, the Reliance-Disney JV has rebranded the existing Disney+ Hotstar app and website to JioHotstar. It also gets a new star-shaped logo with seven points. The JioCinema app appears to remain unchanged for now, but speculations are that it will fade over time.
The company says that existing JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar subscribers will be seamlessly transitioned to the new app. The company says that existing JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar subscribers will be seamlessly transitioned to the new app. Users who had the app were prompted to update it—those with a Disney+ Hotstar premium subscription, like me, saw that they could continue with their plan for the rest of their tenure, and the same for the subscription of JioCinema which was automatically upgraded to premium access.
JioHotstar aims to reshape the subscription model by offering free access to most content for a limited number of hours each month, with Hollywood films being an exception. Additionally, the platform will introduce Sparks, a new initiative designed to showcase India’s biggest digital creators.
New subscribers can access paid content from tiers starting at Rs 149 for three months. JioHotstar will also have a free tier with some access to sports and Indian shows.
