Google’s I/O 2024 event, as expected, was about AI and taking this forward, the tech giant has announced new AI capabilities for Search. The Gemini model backs it, but Google has customised it specifically for Search. This means that Google can now do Googling for you. Here are more details.
Quick Answers with AI Overviews
There are instances where we need some quick answers and don’t have enough time to go through all the results appearing in the search results. The new AI Overview solves this problem. It can provide concise summaries with relevant links if you want to explore the topic in detail.
The feature is only available in the US but Google has confirmed it will add more countries soon. The company has also stated that hundreds of millions of users will get access this week, with over a billion expected by year-end.
Thanks to Google’s customised Gemini model’s multi-step reasoning capabilities, AI overviews can now handle complex questions. Instead of breaking our questions into multiple pieces, we can ask more detailed and nuanced questions simultaneously. However, it’s important to remember that this feature is currently only available for ‘Search Lab’ users in the US.
Google’s Text-Based Links
However, this doesn’t mean that website results are entirely dead. Google is keeping the links alive. The company has introduced a new “Web” filter section on the Google Search page, which shows only text-based links; it’s a completely different section, just like we have for images or videos.

While we have not received this feature in our Google search results, the company has stated that it will start rolling it out globally today and tomorrow. We can expect to see a new section in our search results soon.
Search Using a Video
In addition to searching for answers using a photo, Google has leveraged AI to get answers using a video. You can record a video and using Google Lens, can get answers to your queries. Google will also show an AI Overview in case you need a resolution to a problem. This feature will be available soon for Search Labs users in English in the US and should expand to more regions.
AI-Organised Search Results
Google will also start showing AI-organised search result pages to get fresh ideas on a topic. It will initially provide content on dining and recipes and will expand to topics like movies, music, books, hotels, shopping and more. This will also be available in the US in English.
