Google Maps has announced that it will stop recording your travel history on its cloud servers starting December 1, 2024. The change will apply to the Timeline feature in the Maps app. Google will not store your location history locally on your smartphone for a limited time, and will soon delete all of your travel history from its servers.
The Big Change in Google Maps Timeline Feature
The Timeline feature in Google Maps allows users to view their location history, but only for those who keep the feature enabled. This lets users have a peek at their past to see the places they have visited along with the exact details like date, time, mode of travel, etc. The information is stored on Google’s cloud servers and can be accessed by the user on any phone, laptop, or computer as long as they have the same Google account.
As per the new change, Google Maps will stop recording your location history in its cloud servers. Instead, the app will store this information locally on your Android smartphone. This will significantly improve the privacy of users regarding their travel records.
However, it also means that users can’t access their location history on any other device, apart from their primary smartphone. This data will not sync across all devices of the user, even if they are signed in using the same Google account.
Google also mentions that the company will delete your older location history from its servers. Once the new policy comes into effect on 1 December 2024, the Google Maps app will store your location history on your smartphone for up to 90 days. Users will have the option to extend this period up to 36 months or set it never to delete.
However, Google does not mention whether this data can be transferred from one device to another when the user changes their smartphone. More details about this are awaited.
