Meta has brought Instagram Teen Accounts to India. It enables parents to supervise the Instagram usage of children under the age of 16. Parents can monitor the content explored by kids on the platform and set screen timers to limit their usage. The app also creates a safe environment for children by filtering out age-restrictive and sensitive content. Here are the details.

Instagram Teen Accounts: What is it?

Instagram Teen Accounts have special privileges where the parent can control and monitor all the photos, videos, reels, and other content viewed by the child. These accounts can be created for children below the age of 16 or even 18 in some cases. Let’s look at all the special features:

  • Private Accounts: Instagram Teen Accounts will be set to private by default. The parent will have to manually approve new follower requests. Non-followers cannot view or interact with the account by any means.
  • Messaging Restrictions: These accounts will only receive new messages from approved followers. Random users cannot send then message requests.
  • Protection from Sensitive Content: Teen Accounts will have the strictest filters to avoid sensitive content in the feed. It will also prevent potentially harmful and vulgar media, including fights, arguments, or anything with bad influence.
  • Limited Interactions: Only approved followers can mention and tag accounts on any feed. They will also have strong anti-bullying features where harmful words will automatically be hidden in comments, DMs, and other areas.
  • Time Limit Reminders: The Instagram app will prompt the child to quit the app after 60 minutes of usage. The parent can also set a daily timer, beyond which the child will not be able to use the app.
  • Automatic Sleep Mode: All notifications and alerts will be muted between 10 PM – 7 AM.

How Can Parents Monitor Instagram Teen Accounts?

Parents will be able to see a list of all accounts with whom their child has interacted in the past seven days. They can also restrict app usage to certain hours, which is a helpful feature that can prevent kids from using Instagram during school hours.

Meta says that it will soon add more protection and monitoring features for parents in Instagram Teen Accounts. The platform also mentions that ensuring a safe environment for kids and their parents is a top priority for Meta and Instagram.

How to Create an Instagram Teen Account?

The parent needs to have their own Instagram account and a separate account for their child. Once both accounts are ready, open Settings > Supervision > Create Invite. Here, the parent can send a supervision invite to their child’s Instagram account. The invite needs to be accepted from the other account, after which Meta will convert it into a Teen Account with parental supervision controls.

The feature is rolling out to all users of the latest version of the Instagram app. It is available on both Android and iOS.
