WhatsApp will stop working on KaiOS devices starting in 2025. Popular keypad phones like the original JioPhone, JioPhone 2, and several other feature phones will no longer support WhatsApp. The popular instant messaging app has also stopped accepting downloads and registrations from new users on KaiOS. Here are the details.
WhatsApp Discontinues KaiOS Support
The official KaiOS website mentions that WhatsApp has been discontinued since June 25, 2024. KaiOS-based devices will not be able to download and register WhatsApp. However, existing users will have access to it until early 2025.
KaiOS is a popular operating system for keypad phones. It supports several smartphone-level apps, such as YouTube, Facebook, and other social media platforms. WhatsApp was also among the officially supported apps but has now been discontinued.
According to some users on Reddit, WhatsApp is not allowing users to sideload old versions on KaiOS. Users attempting to install older WhatsApp versions face date and time sync errors, which also happen on Android. WhatsApp has not made an official announcement yet.
Some popular phones affected by this move are the JioPhone, JioPhone 2, Nokia 2720 Flip, Nokia 6300 4G, and many other devices from itel, CAT, Karbonn, and similar OEMs. WhatsApp had previously ended official support for Symbian OS as well. The discontinuation of KaiOS means that the Meta-owned messaging app will now primarily be available only on Android, iOS, and desktop platforms.
In related news, WhatsApp has been pushing several new features and AI integrations. The app recently launched Meta AI support in India, allowing users to interact with the AI chatbot through a separate chat. However, some of these features are unavailable on KaiOS due to hardware limitations. This could be why WhatsApp ended keypad phone support despite having a large potential userbase.
