WhatsApp is working on an AirDrop-like file-sharing system for iPhones. The feature has been spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS in the Testflight program. The Meta-owned messaging app was also spotted testing a similar feature on Android. Here’s everything we know about WhatsApp’s upcoming file-sharing feature.
WhatsApp’s File Sharing Feature Under Development
The latest report from WABetaInfo mentions that WhatsApp Beta for iOS version 24.15.10.70 includes a new feature to let people quickly share files with nearby users without internet connectivity. The functionality appears to be similar to AirDrop. Users will be able to share images, videos, documents, and all other types of supported file formats using this feature.
According to the screenshots attached by WABetaInfo, the feature will be named ‘Nearby share.’ However, this should not be confused with the Nearby Share feature on Android devices, which was recently renamed Quick Share.
To use this feature, the sender shall generate a QR code on WhatsApp. It must be scanned by the receiver after which both devices will get paired. After successful pairing, users can exchange files between the two devices.
WhatsApp’s file-sharing feature was previously spotted in the WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.24.2.20. Instead of using a QR code pairing system, the Android version will require users to search for nearby devices that can accept a file-sharing request. The feature was available to a limited set of beta testers.
WhatsApp has not officially released any details of its upcoming file share feature. Currently, AirDrop is the most popular way to share files across iOS devices. Although it’s unclear whether WhatsApp will support cross-platform file sharing, it will be handy if the app allows users to share files between Android and iOS devices. We will let you know once Meta reveals official details about it. So, stay tuned.
