Google Maps has introduced six new features in India to improve the driving navigation experience. The biggest feature is the addition of flyover alerts, where Google Maps will now clearly tell users whether they should take the flyover.
The company is also integrating AI to notify users about narrow lanes. Let’s look at the new Google Maps features in India.
Google Maps in India: All New Features Explained
Remember when you were enjoying your drive and listening to music and suddenly had a panic moment when you had to decide whether to take or skip a flyover? Google has finally heard the pleas of Indians everywhere and introduced flyover alerts in the Google Maps app on Android and iOS.
The app will now clearly inform you to take a flyover using on-screen alerts and sound notifications.
Starting this week, the flyover alerts will be available in over 40 cities across India. The alerts will work for both 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler navigation. Google says this feature has been pioneered in India based on popular demand.
Google Maps will also notify car drivers when there’s a narrow lane ahead. The company is using artificial intelligence to analyse data from satellite images. The app will create visual and sound alerts if the road is about to get narrow and warn them to slow down.
This feature will be available in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati. It will first arrive on Android and will slowly roll out to the iOS version as well.
Google has partnered with leading EV charging companies in India, EletricPe, Ather, Kazam, and Statiq, to collect data on 2W-EV charging stations in the country. Users will soon be able to spot over 8,000 charging stations from these partners directly in Google Maps. This feature will also show dedicated charging spots for 4-wheelers.
Google Maps will allow users to book metro tickets in Kochi and Chennai. This feature is powered by ONDC and Namma Yatri, making it easier for commuters to book metro tickets for their journey quickly. Users can also pay for the ticket using digital payment methods like UPI. The partnership was originally announced last year and has now been finally implemented in Kochi and Chennai.
The Google Maps app is also simplifying the process of reporting accidents or any other incidents affecting traffic flow. Users can now report events like ongoing construction activities, road blockades, or traffic rush with a single tap in the Google Maps app.
Finally, Google is also introducing a new feature allowing contributors to curate and share a list of the top places in a particular city. Users can also share detailed itineraries using this feature, which will be visible to others when they search for that location. It allows users to search for specific lists ‘Best breakfast points’, ‘Best Cafes’, etc.
