Highlights
  • OpenAI has revealed a prototype of its AI-powered search engine – SearchGPT.
  • It curates a list of the top search results on the internet in real time, just like Google Search.

OpenAI has unveiled a new AI-powered search engine called SearchGPT. It is currently in the prototype stage. SearchGPT allows users to conduct regular web searches similar to Google. It provides answers based on the published content and provides citations to the relevant sources. Here are the details.

SearchGPT by OpenAI: Details

SearchGPT by OpenAI functions as an AI-powered search engine. Users can ask any general question, which will be answered by SearchGPT using readily available sources on the internet. The service will curate a list of the top results and filter them using AI.

SearchGPT works differently than ChatGPT, as the latter is an AI-powered chatbot that can trained on large sets of a fixed database. It has limited access to new information that surfaces on the internet. SearchGPT resolves this problem by showing results based on the latest data available while answering the question.

Currently, SearchGPT is only available to a limited set of users as this is just a prototype. Interested users can sign up for the waitlist from the official website chatgpt.com/search. Approved users will receive an email once they are eligible to access the search engine.

OpenAI mentions that features of SearchGPT will eventually be integrated into ChatGPT. The company has also assured internet publishers and media houses that the data and results from SearchGPT will NOT be used for training OpenAI’s large language models like GPT.

Should Google Be Worried?

SearchGPT looks like an upcoming competitor to Google Search, which has been the world’s top search engine for over two decades. However, OpenAI has not disclosed an exact roadmap for the SearchGPT expansion as a standalone search engine.

It is worth noting that Google started experimenting with AI-powered search results in Google Search, called AI overviews. However, it faced a huge backlash from users as it provided factually incorrect information. Google’s AI overviews were highly inconsistent compared to traditional Google searches. The company had to slow down the deployment of AI overviews within weeks of its launch.

It will be interesting to see how OpenAI’s SearchGPT turns out as a search engine.
