  • WhatsApp is working on another security feature to block spam on its platform.
  • By default, users will be able to block messages from unknown numbers.

WhatsApp is committed to making its platform as secure as possible. The Meta-owned instant messaging service is now testing a new feature that enables blocking messages from unknown numbers by default.

Currently, users have to report and block messages from unknown numbers. And there is always the risk of accidentally clicking a malicious link in the message. The new feature will eliminate this risk and make blocking more seamless. It will also mean users will not have to sit and block each unknown number individually.

According to the screenshot shared by the publication, WhatsApp will not block all messages with unknown numbers. The feature description reads that the platform will only block messages from unknown numbers exceeding a specific volume of messages.

This means that WhatsApp does not block people from messaging others genuinely for the first time. On the other hand, numbers that have been sending bulk messages to many contacts will be blocked immediately.

WhatsApp rolled out a feature to disable link previews to prevent accidental press.

WhatsApp Spam a Serious Issue in India

This feature will be helpful for WhatsApp users in India because of the rampant spam issue. From YouTube likes scams to promotional messages, 95% of WhatsApp users in India receive spam messages daily. Often, users, especially those who are not tech-savvy, fall prey to messaging scams via WhatsApp. There’s also no denying that these bulk messages have become a nuisance on WhatsApp, especially in India, where the Meta-owned app is the default messaging app.

Once it rolls out, the new privacy feature will help protect WhatsApp users from potential financial or privacy fraud. Hopefully, this will be out of beta soon and made available to all users on the stable build.
