Highlights
  • WhatsApp could soon introduce Instagram-like themes for chats.
  • The app is working on a feature to let users send and receive messages without sharing their phone numbers.

WhatsApp is working to revamp its theme feature. It will soon allow users to set separate themes for individual chats instead of having a uniform design for the entire app. The instant messaging app is also working on the much-awaited username feature, which allows people to send messages on WhatsApp without sharing their phone numbers. Here are the details.

WhatsApp Individual Chat Themes

WABetaInfo has spotted a new theme feature in the iOS beta version of WhatsApp. Users could soon be able to set separate designs for each contact for a personalised messaging experience. The concept appears to be similar to Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger.

Screenshots reveal that users will be able to change the colour of the message bubbles and set separate backgrounds for each conversation. The beta version indicates that WhatsApp may include 10 preset themes. However, it is not clear whether these changes will apply to the receiver.

The new theme feature has only been spotted on WhatsApp for iOS beta version 24.12.10.77. Its availability on Android and WhatsApp web is not known yet.

WhatsApp Usernames Could Launch Soon

WhatsApp’s username feature has been in the works for quite a while now. It was again spotted in the latest Android beta version, 2.24.18.2.

WhatsApp users can set a personalised username, similar to other social media platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). They will be able to send messages directly without sharing their personal phone numbers, which will improve their privacy.

WhatsApp is also working to implement a PIN system for additional security. When a user wants to start a new conversation with a username, they will be asked to enter a PIN. Without this PIN, random users will not be able to send you messages, even if they have your username.

However, this new username and PIN system is only available to a limited set of beta users. WhatsApp or Meta have not disclosed a timeline for its public rollout.
