Apple and Airtel have joined hands to introduce music streaming services in India. Airtel users will soon have access to Apple TV+ content and the Apple Music library. Under the new partnership, Airtel will also shut down its 10-year-old Wynk Music platform. Here are the details.
Apple’s Partnership With Airtel Explained
The new partnership between Apple and Bharti Airtel aims to serve a premium content streaming experience exclusively for Airtel users in India. The telecom giant will directly introduce all the media content from Apple TV+ on the Airtel Xtream app.
Airtel users whose plan includes an Airtel Xstream subscription will have access to all the shows, web series, documentaries, etc., from Apple TV+, including sports content.
The biggest change will be music streaming, as Airtel plans to shut down Wynk Music completely. Airtel users will directly access Apple Music on all platforms with their registered mobile numbers. This move does not affect existing Apple Music subscribers.
These changes to Airtel Xstream and Wynk Music will take effect later this year. Amit Tripathi, Bharti Airtel’s Chief Marketing Officer, confirmed this news via a press release.
Airtel’s collaboration with Apple for music streaming will challenge Jio. For reference, Mukesh Ambani’s Jio acquired Saavn in 2018 to introduce JioSaavn. As of now, it is the fourth largest music streaming platform in India and competes against Spotify, YouTube Music, and others. Jio’s parent company, Reliance Industries, recently acquired a majority in Disney+Hotstar. Over the upcoming months, all the content from Disney+Hotstar is expected to be merged into JioCinema.
Including Apple Music and Apple TV+ services for Airtel users will be a good addition for the company’s telecom subscribers.
