OpenAI is now rolling out the feature to free users worldwide (barring Europe and the UK). The advanced voice mode was earlier released for people with a paid subscription. Check out the details below.
ChatGPT’s Voice Mode for Free
While the feature is accessible to people with a free account, there’s a catch. Users will get a limited preview of Advanced Voice Mode. OpenAI notes that “Free users have access to a monthly preview to try advanced voice,” which translates to 15 minutes per month.
Once the limit is hit, users will have to wait a month for the limit to reset. If waiting is a problem, users can upgrade to ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise plans. It’s worth noting that advanced voice mode is limited to 15 minutes per day on paid plans.
How to Use Advanced Voice mode on ChatGPT?
Here’s how to try out advanced voice mode on ChatGPT now:
- Update ChatGPT to the latest version from Play Store or App Store.
- Upon opening the app, there’ll be a welcome screen for advanced voice mode. Click Continue.
- Choose any one of the available voices shown on screen.
- Start conversing with ChatGPT and it will reply back in a conversational way.
You can access it again on ChatGPT by tapping the advanced voice button situated in the bottom right corner. To recall, the advanced voice mode on ChatGPT is a speech-to-speech feature based on the GPT-4o model, which can facilitate natural and real-time conversations by utilising non-verbal cues.
It supports nine voices, namely, Arbor, Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, Maple, Sol, Spruce and Vale. Interestingly, the Sky voice that OpenAI demoed in February is currently unavailable due to outrage over its similarity to the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson, who played an AI voice assistant in the movie “Her.”
