  • India’s beloved password can be hacked in the blink of an eye.
  • The security report also reveals that millions of internet users continue to use easy passwords, despite the security threat of being hacked.

Nordpass, a popular password-managing software, recently conducted its sixth edition of Top 200 Most Common Passwords. It revealed that 123456 was the most commonly used password in India. The research also mentions that the top 10 popular passwords can be cracked in less than one second. Here are the details of the report.

Nordpass Security Report on Commonly Used Passwords

The research was conducted by Nordpass in collaboration with NordStellar, a cybersecurity firm. The group analyzed a 2.5TB database of leaked passwords obtained from the dark web and other publicly available sources. The research was conducted across 44 countries, including India.

Here are the top 10 most common passwords used by Indians as per Nordpass:

Rank Password Time taken to crack Number of users
1 123456 < 1 second 76,981
2 password < 1 second 25,912
3 12345678 < 1 second 25,588
4 123456789 < 1 second 23,434
5 abcd1234 < 1 second 13,162
6 12345 < 1 second 12,327
7 qwerty123 < 1 second 10,438
8 1234567890 < 1 second 8,529
9 india123 50 seconds 6,864
10 1qaz@WSX 11 minutes 6,819

This is a concerning matter as these passwords can be cracked by using brute force in less than one second.

However, India was not the only country struggling with easier passwords. The report also mentions that 123456 was used by over 1 million people globally, including the United States, China, Germany, France, and many other nations.

Nordpass has published a detailed table of all the common passwords on its official website. Sorting the data country-wise reveals that millions of internet users continue to use easy-to-guess passwords for their online accounts, which is a huge threat to their security. In fact, 123456 has emerged as the widely used password (5 out of 6 times) in the last few years of the same research.

Nordpass has mentioned a set of guidelines to increase awareness of this. The company is also encouraging users to start using Passkeys, which use biometric verification methods for login instead of traditional alphanumeric passwords.

It is worth noting that companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and other IT giants have joined the FIDO Alliance, and adopted the Passkeys as the modern solution. Users can now log in to their respective accounts by using fingerprint, face unlock, or other authentication methods which prevent identity theft.
