WhatsApp enabled BHIM app-based UPI payments to leverage its large user base and become popular in the UPI space. This endeavor has a new level; the messaging app could soon support UPI Lite, which can help people make small transactions without using a PIN and further popularise WhatsApp Payments. Here are the details.
WhatsApp UPI Lite Support Coming Soon
As per some digging by Android Authority, WhatsApp’s APK has some hints of UPI Lite. The app’s latest beta update (v2.25.5.17)’s code strings have reference to UPI Lite. The code suggests that WhatsApp will soon enable PIN-less UPI payments.
This setup will also ensure that transaction failures are reduced, making things quite seamless for people. So, while this will make it easy for users to transact via WhatsApp, it will also make WhatsApp Payments a more popular choice. However, this won’t support WhatsApp’s multi-device functionality and will work with the primary device.
The feature seems to be in the testing phase, and there’s no word on when it will reach general users.
What is UPI Lite, and Which Apps Support It?
For those who don’t know, UPI Lite is an extension of UPI and enables small transactions (under Rs 500) without needing a UPI PIN. This helps people make one-tap payments, which take place in a jiffy. These transactions are based on the same UPI protocols but ensure less load on Remitter Bank CBS, thus leading to fewer payment failures. UPI Lite supports 54 banks as of now. You can know more about it here.
Currently, the following apps are supporting UPI Litte:
- Google Pay
- PhonePe
- Paytm
WhatsApp is expected to join this league soon, and it will compete neck-to-neck with the market leaders.
That said, WhatsApp Payments had to go through multiple rounds of approvals before becoming official, and it was only recently that it got the green light to make it available to all users. So, it remains to be seen if this is what happens with UPI Lite. We will keep you posted with new updates on this, so stay tuned.
