Google brought AI to most of its products at its I/O 2024 keynote. This also includes the Workspace apps (Gmail, Sheets, Drive, Docs, and more), which will soon have a new Gemini 1.5 Pro-backed sidebar. Here’s everything you need to know about.
Gemini 1.5 Pro in the Updated Side Panel of Your Workspace Apps
AI or Gemini on the Workspace apps is not an entirely new concept. It has been there for quite some time now. However, Google has now introduced a new revamped side panel for Workspace Labs and Gemini for Workspace Alpha users with plans to extend this upgrade to all the Workspace customers and Google One AI Premium subscribers in the coming month.
The updated side panel is nothing but a Gemini 1.5 Pro-backed chatbot. It will allow users to ask for summarisation, analysis, or content creation without leaving their current application. The updated interface automatically provides summaries of ongoing conversations or content and offers contextual prompts to facilitate smoother workflow transitions.
It is powered by Google’s advanced models and offers expanded context and improved reasoning capabilities. As a result, users can expect more precise responses based on comprehensive datasets.
For example, if you get several emails from your stock broker every month, you can ask Gemini in the side panel in Gmail to “summarise all the emails” from it. The AI assistant will quickly give all the important information in bite-size shots.
Gemini in Gmail Mobile App
The AI magic is not stopping on the big screen. Google is all set to bring the Gemini to a smaller screen. Gemini will soon be able to analyse email threads and provide a summarised view of the key highlights directly in the Gmail app.
Furthermore, Google is also improving its smart reply feature on Gmail’s mobile app. The company will introduce a new Contextual Smart Reply feature that will offer longer, more detailed suggestions that fully capture the intent of your message.
While suggested replies and summaries are helpful, we may need more customised responses or have to gather more context before replying. It seems like Google will introduce a feature to address that. The company has also mentioned that users can soon chat with Gemini using Gmail’s Q&A section to get additional information.
For example, let’s say you are coincidentally buying a new sofa and have received quotations from all the suppliers. Before replying to anyone, you want to compare the prices of all the vendors. So, in this case, you can ask, “Compare my recent sofa set bids by price and availability.” Google will quickly respond with all the relevant details in the quick chatting section, and you can compare each quotation without juggling between all the emails on that tiny screen.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that the ‘Summarise in the Gmail app’ feature will be available to Workspace Labs users, starting this month and will be available to all Gemini for Workspace customers and Google One AI Premium subscribers next month, apart from that the other two features will be available for Workspace Labs users from July of this year.
Google will also introduce the ‘Help me Write’ feature in Spanish and Portuguese in Docs and Gmail soon.
