  • Google has showcased several new AI features coming to Android soon.
  • The company also talked about Gemini Nano, its on-device AI model.

The Google I/O 2024 event was all about AI. Besides several Google products getting AI, new ones have been announced for Android too. This includes an enhanced circle to search, Gemini on Android, and more. Here’s a look at all the AI features announced for Android.

Enhanced Circle to Search

The Circle to Search feature was introduced earlier this year during the Samsung Unpacked event. Initially, this feature was only available on Samsung Galaxy S24 series devices. However, over time, Google has expanded its reach to some Pixel devices and added several new features.

Now the company has announced that Circle to Search is now capable of helping students with homework. When they circle a problem they’re stuck on, they’ll get step-by-step instructions right from their phones or tablets. These new capabilities are now backed by Google’s LearnLM project, which is still improving. It will soon learn to handle even more complex problems.

Google’s official blog post states that over 100 million devices already use the Circle to Search feature and this should be doubled by the end of the year.

Improved Gemini

Gemini on Android is a new assistant leveraging generative AI, expected to enhance a user’s creativity and productivity. Gemini is now integrated into Android itself, which means it will start evolving to better grasp the context of your screen and the app you’re currently using.

Google has also announced that users will soon be able to use Gemini on top of any app. For example, you can drag and drop generated images into Gmail, Google Messages, and other places or tap “Ask this video” to find specific information on a YouTube video. Besides, the Gemini Advanced users will get the ability to get quick answers from a PDF file without having to scroll through multiple pages.

According to the company, this feature will start rolling out to users next month. However, there’s no word when it will arrive for Indian users.

Gemini Nano

Gemini Nano is the company’s on-device AI model. According to Google, Android is the first mobile operating system to include a built-in, on-device foundation model. Gemini Nano is also said to keep the user privacy intact.

The Gemini Nano will also enhance the TalkBack experience on the device. According to the company, TalkBack users encounter approximately 90 unlabeled images daily, which can be challenging in understanding visual content. This update aims to address this issue by providing richer and clearer descriptions of images, whether it’s deciphering details in photos sent by family or friends or discerning clothing styles while browsing online.

Furthermore, the Android device will also understand more information in context, such as sights, sounds, and spoken language. However, like the majority of the new advancements, the Gemini Nano will first arrive on Pixel devices later this year.

Scam Detection Alerts

Google also showcased a new ‘Scam Detection Alerts’ feature, which will use the Gemini Nano model. The feature will provide real-time alerts during a call if it detects conversation patterns commonly associated with scams.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on when this feature will arrive on Android devices. However, we are expecting it to make its debut, at least on the Pixel devices, later this year.
