Google has unveiled Android 15 Beta 2 on the second day of I/O 2024. With the latest Beta iteration, Google has focused on productivity and enhanced privacy. It is only available for Pixel devices, while other brands are rolling out beta one for their phones. Let’s take a closer look at Android’s latest iteration:

Android 15 Beta 2: New Features

The latest features Google announced for the Android 15 Beta 2 are as follows.

  • Private Space: This feature allows users to create a separate profile for sensitive apps. As the name suggests, it keeps the selected apps hidden when the device is locked, ensuring they remain out of sight.
  • The apps in Private Space will have a dedicated container in the launcher, making them invisible in recent apps, notifications, and settings. It will add a layer of protection for sensitive information, ensuring it is only accessible when explicitly needed.
  • App Pairs: Google has introduced a new App Pairs feature that allows users to save and launch two apps simultaneously in split-screen mode. This can be particularly helpful when referencing a document while composing an email or watching a video while browsing the web.
  • Predictive Back: The company has enhanced the Predictive Back feature with the latest Beta 2 version. It is now enabled by default, eliminating the need for developers to activate it manually. The update offers smoother animations when navigating back to the home screen, transitioning between tasks, or moving across different activities.
  • Media Permission Management: Google has also introduced more refined media permission management. Now, apps can only highlight recently selected photos and videos when granted partial access.
  • Health Connect: The Health Connect feature in Beta 2 has been expanded to include two new data types: skin temperature and training plans. This update broadens the range of health and fitness data users can track and manage, providing more comprehensive health monitoring capabilities.
  • Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Animation: The animation for entering the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode has been smoothed out in the Beta 2 version. This improvement benefits apps with overlay UI elements, delivering a more polished and fluid transition when minimising videos or other content into PiP mode.
  • Security Enhancement: With the Beta 2 update, Google is trying to address some security concerns by blocking apps that do not match the stack’s top Unique identifier (UID) from launching activities. It prevents malicious apps from exploiting vulnerabilities by launching another app’s activity and overlaying themselves on top, protecting users from potential attacks.
