America’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek are currently hot topics in the world of AI. Both tools are powered by powerful large language models built indigenously by the respective countries. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has now confirmed that India is working on its own AI model that will be affordable and unbiased to rival ChatGPT and DeepSeek. Here are the details.
India Goes All-In For AI Model Development
In a recent AI Event, Ashwini Vaishnaw officially announced that India will soon have its own foundational AI model. It will support native Indian languages and understand the context and needs of the local users. The project is being developed by top researchers in the country and will be ready in the next 8-10 months.
The government will also subsidize the research and development of these foundational AI models. Ashwini mentioned that India’s AI model will be trained on 18,693 GPUs. He further added that OpenAI’s ChatGPT was developed on 25,000 GPUs, while DeepSeek was made with just 2,000 GPUs.
The project is already in development and India currently has an AI facility with 10,000 active GPUs. However, the minister did not share any additional details on the features, research facility, or exact parameters of this model. He also said that India’s AI model will be highly affordable compared to ChatGPT and DeepSeek.
For context, an AI foundational model is the base over which tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini are built. Consider it as a massive database that is capable of fetching answers to any question with logical reasoning. A single AI model can power thousands of tools and services.
Nvidia-Reliance Partnership, Union Budget 2025: All in favour of AI Development
Ashwini’s announcement is not the first step from India in AI development. Last year, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance started a new partnership with Nvidia to develop and expand AI technologies in India. The flagship GPU company will set up additional R&D facilities in the country and help Indian companies to develop their own AI models and services.
The Union Budget 2025 has also allocated Rs 10,000 crores to boost the development and adoption of AI. The government will provide financial assistance to AI startups and top talents in the country to accelerate India’s AI mission.
