WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature to enhance its voice message service. The feature allows users to send short voice notes to contacts when they cannot text. However, sometimes, recipients cannot play the message out loud and miss it. The new feature solves this issue and allows users to check the voice message without playing it. Let’s check out the details of the latest WhatsApp Voice Message feature.
WhatsApp Now Transcribes Voice Messages
WhatsApp introduced voice messages on its platform to bring a personal touch to messaging. With the new voice message transcription feature, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform intends to improve accessibility and convenience. According to the official blog, the feature will work for both incoming and outgoing voice messages.
The company says that all voice message transcriptions are generated and stored on the device itself. This will ensure that the users’ privacy is maintained and that the transcriptions are not stored by WhatsApp or others. WhatsApp has also announced the languages supported by the voice message transcription service.
According to the blog, the languages supported depend on the iOS version. Those on iOS 16 or newer will get English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and Arabic language support. Users on iOS 17 and newer will get additional languages, including Danish, Finish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, and Thai.
There’s no word on whether the feature will support Hindi language currently. But we can expect it to be rolled out in the future considering India is a huge market for the company.
How to Enable and See WhatsApp Voice Message Transcripts?
WhatsApp says that voice message transcripts are disabled by default. Users can turn them on by following the below steps.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
- Tap on the Chats section.
- Scroll to Voice Message Transcripts and turn it on.
- Select your transcript language.
- Done.
WhatsApp says that Siri must be enabled in order to see these transcripts. If Siri is not enabled when turning on the voice message transcripts in WhatsApp, users will need to download the selected language package for transcripts.
After enabling, users can check transcripts by long-pressing a voice message and then tapping on the Transcribe option. The feature might show a “Transcript unavailable” error if the transcript language setting doesn’t match the voice message language, some words are not recognised, or the voice message language is not supported.
WhatsApp has announced that the Transcripts feature will be rolling out globally over the next few weeks, starting with selected languages. The company will add more languages in the coming months.
