WhatsApp is now working on Search on Web functionality for its desktop web client. Notably, the Meta-owned company started testing it on mobile platforms last month. WABetaInfo has reported that the feature is also available to WhatsApp Web beta users. Here’s what you need to know.
WhatsApp Web Will Soon Get Search on Web Functionality for Shared Images
WABetaInfo says the feature has been spotted in a WhatsApp Web beta update and shared a screenshot of it in action. As you can see in the image below, you can tap on the three-dot icon and select the Search on Web option to reverse-search the image you received.
This is important, considering how many doctored images circulate on WhatsApp today. The number of fake pictures, from AI-generated videos and photos to photoshopped and morphed images, is higher than ever. With this new function, WhatsApp Web users will be able to get more information about the shared image and check its authenticity.
Using the search on web feature, users can upload the image received on Google to see if it exists online and check the context provided on the original website if it does. This will help users evaluate whether the image has been edited, manipulated, or removed from its original context.
According to WABetaInfo, once users click on the search on web option, the image is directly uploaded to Google for reverse image search, and WhatsApp does not have access to its content. WhatsApp will warn users about this sharing process with Google through a pop-up explicitly outlining the policy and seeking their consent before acting.
